Knee Deep in the Hoopla is the title of an album released in 1985 by Starship (the successor band to the Jefferson Starship and the Jefferson Airplane) and is a line in the song We Built this City.
We Built This City references the Golden Gate Bridge and Starship’s home town of San Francisco, specifically during the radio DJ overlay:
I’m looking out over that Golden Gate Bridge
Out on another gorgeous Sunny Saturday
I’m seein’ that bumper to bumper traffic
It’s your favorite radio station, in your favorite radio city,
The City by the Bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps
Blender magazine includes We Built This City in its “50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever.” Blender editor Craig Marks remarked (according to Wikipedia, anyway), “It purports to be anti-commercial but reeks of ’80s corporate-rock commercialism.”
